# Install Better Storage

## Step 1 - Pick the right file

Every download has two files. Use the one that matches your server:

| Your server    | The file                            |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------- |
| 26.1 and 26.2  | `BetterStorage-<version>-mc26.jar`  |
| 26.3 and newer | `BetterStorage-<version>-mc263.jar` |

## Step 2 - Put it on the server

Drop that one file into your server's `plugins/` folder and restart. That is the whole installation.

On the first start Better Storage makes its folder, `plugins/BetterStorage/`, with:

* `config.yml`, every setting, explained in the file itself
* `messages.yml`, every text players see, so you can reword or translate it
* `BetterStorage-pack.zip`, the optional [resource pack](/plugins/better-storage/getting-started/resource-pack.md)
* its records, in a small database file

## Step 3 - Try it

Stand next to a few chests with something in them, then sneak and right-click one of them with an empty hand. The storage screen opens and shows everything in that chunk. `/bs browse` does the same from anywhere in the chunk.

That is all most servers need. Every player can use everything straight away, and claims are respected. Only change [the settings](/plugins/better-storage/reference/settings.md) if you want something to work differently.

## Who can do what

Everything players need is allowed by default:

* opening the storage screen, searching it and taking from it
* giving chests a job and setting up hopper filters
* upgrading chests into machines

Two things are for operators only, because they destroy items:

* **Trash can chests**, which destroy anything sent to them
* **"Destroy blocked items"** in a hopper filter

To let other players use those, give them `betterstorage.filter.void`. Every permission is on [Commands, permissions & placeholders](/plugins/better-storage/reference/commands.md).

## Running a network or a big server?

Better Storage keeps its records in a file by default, which is right for almost everyone. To use your own MySQL or MariaDB server instead, set `database.type: mysql` and fill in the details under it in `config.yml`, then restart.

On **Folia**, the storage screen only works for chests in the region the player is standing in. That is a Folia rule, not a setting.
