# The resource pack

Better Storage works without a resource pack. The pack is an optional extra that makes it look and feel better for players who have it:

* **The storage screen** gets wooden slots, tab buttons with clear icons along the top, and a scrollbar whose thumb glides as you scroll.
* **Opening a normal chest** shows a small panel beside it: the chest's job, what it takes, its prio and any upgrade.
* **Clicking outside an open chest's window**, with nothing on your cursor, opens the storage screen (left-click) or that chest's settings (right-click).

Players without the pack see the normal menus, and everything still works.

## Step 1 - Add it to your server's pack

The pack is in the plugin folder: `plugins/BetterStorage/BetterStorage-pack.zip`. It is replaced with the newest one every time the server starts, so after an update the zip is always current.

**Better Storage never sends the pack to players itself.** A player can only have one server pack, so it has to go into the one your server already sends.

Open the zip and copy its `assets/betterstorage/` folder into your server's resource pack, next to whatever is already in its `assets/` folder. Nothing in it clashes with other packs: every file sits under its own `betterstorage` name. Keep `CREDITS.txt` with it, for the button icons.

No server pack yet? You can send the zip as it is: set it as the `resource-pack` in `server.properties`, or send it with any pack plugin.

## Step 2 - Switch it on

In `plugins/BetterStorage/config.yml`:

```

Then run `/bs reload`.

**Only switch this on once players really get the pack.** Players who have it see the new look, and players who turned the pack down keep the normal menus. But if the pack never reaches anyone, every screen would show missing pictures for the players Better Storage thinks have it.

## How it knows who has the pack

A player counts as having it once they loaded your server's pack this session, whether it was sent by `server.properties` or by a plugin. Players who decline the pack, or whose download fails, keep the normal menus.

## After an update

When a new version of Better Storage changes the pack, copy the new `assets/betterstorage/` folder over the old one, and remove the old folder first, so files that were renamed don't linger. The release notes say when the pack changed.
