# Chest jobs

Every chest can have a job, a list of what it takes, and a prio. Together they decide where **Quick Dump** and items you put back through the storage screen end up, so your storage sorts itself.

## Opening a chest's settings

Any one of these:

* In the storage screen opened from that chest, click **This chest**.
* Look at the chest up close and type `/bs edit`.
* With the [resource pack](/plugins/better-storage/getting-started/resource-pack.md), open the chest and right-click anywhere outside its window.

Nothing changes until you click **Save**. Escape closes without changing anything.

## The jobs

| Job           | What it does                                                                    |
| ------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Standard**  | Just a chest. Stores things.                                                    |
| **Vault** | Quick Dump never fills it, and machines never take from it. For your treasures. |
| **Overflow** | Catches whatever the other chests can't fit. |
| **Trash can** | Destroys anything sent to it. Really destroys it. |

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Trash can is for operators** unless the server gives you `betterstorage.filter.void`. Items sent to a Trash can are gone for good.
{% endhint %}

Two more jobs, **Feeder** and **Collector**, only show up when the server has set machines to share a chunk's chests (`processing.source: chunk`, see [Settings](/plugins/better-storage/reference/settings.md)). Then chests that work take their materials from Feeder chests and put what they make into Collector chests.

## What it takes

**Choose what it takes** saves your job first, then opens a screen where you pick the items allowed in:

* **Shift-click an item** in your inventory to add it.
* **Left-click** an added item to match its whole group instead, like all logs. Click again for the next group it belongs to.
* **Right-click** it to remove it.

The switches at the bottom work like a [hopper filter's](/plugins/better-storage/using-it/hoppers.md): an **allow-list** (only these items) or a **block-list** (everything except these), and whether names, damage and enchantments have to match too.

A chest without a list takes anything. Careful with an allow-list that has nothing on it: that lets nothing in.

## Prio

When items are put away automatically, chests with a bigger number fill up first. It goes from -50 to 50. Leave it at 0 if you don't mind.

How Quick Dump picks a chest, in order:

1. Only chests whose list allows the item. Vault chests are skipped.
2. The highest prio.
3. A chest that asks for that item, before chests that take anything.
4. The chest that already holds the most of it.
5. If it's still a tie, the nearest one (or, if the server chose so, the chests take turns).
