# The storage screen

Everything in the chests around you, in one screen. Items stay in their chests: when you take something, it comes straight out of whichever chest holds it.

## Opening it

| How                                                  | What happens                                                                                                                                                      |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Sneak and right-click a chest** with an empty hand | Shows everything in that chest's chunk |
| **`/bs browse`** | Shows everything in the chunk you are standing in |
| **Click outside a chest's window** | Only with the [resource pack](/plugins/better-storage/getting-started/resource-pack.md): left-click for the storage screen, right-click for that chest's settings |

A normal right-click on a chest still just opens the chest.

It counts chests, trapped chests, barrels and copper chests. Placed shulker boxes count too if the server turned that on. You only see chests you could open by hand: other people's claims stay private.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Stay close.** The screen closes if you walk out of the chunk or the chunks right next to it.
{% endhint %}

## Taking and putting items

| Click                                | What it does                                         |
| ------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| **Left-click** an item               | Takes a stack onto your cursor                       |
| **Right-click** an item              | Takes half a stack                                   |
| **Shift-click** an item | Puts a stack straight into your inventory |
| **Q** over an item | Drops one at your feet. **Ctrl + Q** drops a stack |
| **F** over an item (or middle-click) | Makes the chests that hold it glow for a few seconds |
| Click with an item on your cursor | Puts it away into the chests |

**Quick Dump** (the hopper button) stores everything you carry that is already kept in these chests: your cobblestone goes where the cobblestone is. Your hotbar is left alone. Shift-click an item in your own inventory to put away just that one.

## Finding things

**The tabs** along the top show All items, Building blocks, Nature, Food, Tools and combat, or Redstone. Each tab's tooltip says how many items it holds. All items also shows how many empty slots are left.

**Search** finds items by name. Type part of a name, like `oak`. You can also try:

| Type        | Finds                                |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------ |
| `#logs`     | everything in a group, like all logs |
| `@food`     | anything you can eat                 |
| `enchanted` | enchanted items                      |
| `!stone`    | everything except stone              |

Pick **All items** to clear a search.

**Scrolling.** Turn your mouse wheel while pointing at the scrollbar on the right: the list moves a row at a time. **The order button** at the bottom of the scrollbar switches between most first and A to Z.

## Blocks broken open for you

With `/bs unpack` switched on, taking more than there is loose breaks open stored blocks to make up the difference. Taking 20 iron ingots when only 5 are loose opens two iron blocks and puts the spare ingots back. Type `/bs unpack` again to switch it off. It is your own setting.

## This chest

Opened from a chest, the screen has a **This chest** button. It opens that chest's settings: its job, what it takes and its prio. See [Chest jobs](/plugins/better-storage/using-it/chest-jobs.md).
