# Chests that work

Put a furnace "into" a chest and the chest smelts what you put in it, by itself. The same goes for five other blocks. The chest keeps working as a chest: you fill it and empty it like any other.

## Upgrading a chest

1. **Hold the upgrade block**, for example a furnace.
2. **Sneak and right-click the chest.**
3. **Choose** in the window that opens: **Yes, upgrade it!** uses up the block (and pays any cost the server set), or **No, just place it** puts the block down next to the chest as normal.

| Block | The chest becomes | What it does |
| ------------- | ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Furnace | Smelter | Cooks and smelts what you put in it, burning fuel from the chest |
| Smoker | Cooker | Cooks food twice as fast |
| Blast Furnace | Ore Smelter | Smelts ores twice as fast |
| Crafter | Auto-Crafter | Crafts one item you choose, over and over |
| Brewing Stand | Brewer | Brews potions from water bottles, nether wart, blaze powder and ingredients |
| Composter | Composter | Turns plants and food scraps into bone meal |

Smelting and brewing take as long as with the real block. A floating name over the chest shows what it has become.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Only plain items are used up.** Named, enchanted or damaged items in an upgraded chest are never touched, so your good sword is safe in a Smelter.
{% endhint %}

## Changing what it does

Sneak and right-click an upgraded chest with an **empty hand** to open its settings.

**The Auto-Crafter** asks what to make. The list shows craftable items you are carrying, or type a name, like `bread` or `oak planks`. Pick **Pack into blocks** to turn anything with 9 or more of itself into its block, like 9 iron ingots into an iron block.

Switch on **Stop at a target** to make a set number and then stop, until you start the count again. With it off, it keeps going for as long as it has materials.

## Taking the upgrade off

Sneak and right-click the chest while holding a **brush**. By default you get the block back; the server can choose to refund what you paid too, or nothing.

## For server owners

Upgrades cost only the block itself by default. You can add a price in money, points, XP levels or items per type, scale them all, give some players a discount, and choose what removing an upgrade gives back. See **upgrades** in [Settings](/plugins/better-storage/reference/settings.md).

Each type has its own permission, so you can leave one out, for example `betterstorage.upgrade.crafter`. All are allowed by default.
