# Troubleshooting

Each heading is what you or a player sees. Most answers end in `/guide reload`.

## Opening the guide

### "The guide isn't set up yet: its resource pack has no web address"

The pack has nowhere to be downloaded from. The server console says why when it starts or reloads. Usually `resource-pack.serve.enabled` was turned off without putting a link in `resource-pack.url`, or the port is already in use by something else. See [Install it](/plugins/markdown-guide/getting-started/installation.md).

### "The guide's look is still loading"

The player's game is still downloading the pack. It takes a moment after joining, and again after you add new pictures. Open the guide again in a few seconds.

### "The guide needs this server's resource pack, and your game didn't load it"

Either the player said no to the pack, or their game couldn't download it.

* **They said no, or turned packs off.** In the server list, pick your server, press **Edit**, set **Server Resource Packs** to **Enabled**, and join again.
* **Packs are on and it still happens.** The download failed. Check that `public-address` is the address players join with and that the port (`8085` unless you changed it) is open on your host.
* **It works for you but nobody else.** `public-address` is still empty, so the pack is offered at `127.0.0.1`, which only the server's own computer can reach.

{% hint style="info" %}
Set `resource-pack.required: true` to disconnect players who say no, so the question never comes up.
{% endhint %}

### "Unknown guide page: ..."

No page has that name. A page's name is its file name without the number in front and without `.md`, and pages in folders start with the folder: `pages/04-mantle/01-zones.md` is `mantle/zones`. Typing `/guide` and pressing Tab lists them all.

### `/guide <name>` runs a command instead of opening my page

The page is named after a command word: `edit`, `reload`, `config`, `settings`, `apply`, `trust`, `widgets` or `menu`. It still opens from links and the page list; rename the file to open it by name as well.

## On a page

### A red "\[no picture: ...]" in the text

That picture can't be drawn:

* **Your own picture:** the file isn't in `plugins/MarkdownGuide/images/`, or its name is spelled differently. Names must match exactly, `.png` and all.
* **An item or block:** a few things, like chests, banners, heads, beds, shields and shulker boxes, are drawn by the game itself and have no picture to show. The console lists every one left out. A misspelt name does the same; the editor's item search has the right ones.

### Items show as boxes in the editor

The editor's preview draws every item and picture as a grey box, the size it comes out in game. **Show in game** shows the real thing. An item new to the guide only reaches the pack when you save, so until then it is a box in game too.

### A placeholder shows as written

* **`{{papi:...}}` on the page:** PlaceholderAPI isn't installed. The console names every page that uses one.
* **`%...%` on the page:** PlaceholderAPI is there, but not that placeholder's expansion. Run `/papi ecloud download <name>`, then `/papi reload`.

### A settings tag shows on the page as written

The tag doesn't point at a real setting: the plugin's folder name or the path to the setting is spelt differently, or that setting isn't in the plugin's `config.yml` yet. The console says which. Run `/guide settings <plugin>` and copy the tag it gives you.

### My changes to `style.css` don't show

Run `/guide reload`. A rule with a mistake in it is skipped while the rest still works, so look for a missing `:`, `;` or `}` in the rule that didn't change. The editor's preview shows each change before you save it.

## The web editor

### "That link has expired, or its changes were already applied"

Editor links work for a while, then stop. Run `/guide edit` for a fresh one.

### "Another browser has this editor open"

<figure><img src="https://1037515809-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F37kaU8TF94yOlMmCwXdl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-e7d31fa78ce004eb21fc8de0272bbb6d380a6e0f%2Feditor-turned-away.png?alt=media" alt="The editor saying another browser has it open"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Each link belongs to the first browser that opened it. You also get a warning in chat when a second one tries. If that wasn't you, someone else has your link: run `/guide edit` for a new one, and the old link can no longer reach your server.

### "Lost the connection to your server"

The preview stops, but saving still works: **Save** gives you a command like `/guide apply abc123` to paste in game. Run `/guide edit` to reconnect.

### "Left ... alone: it changed on disk since you opened the editor"

Someone changed that file on the server, by hand or from another editor, after you opened yours. The editor doesn't overwrite their work. Run `/guide edit` to start from the newer version, and make your change again.

### "Couldn't reach the editor service"

The server can't reach the relay at `bin.esmp.fun`. Some hosts block servers from reaching the internet; ask yours to allow it, or [run the editor yourself](/plugins/markdown-guide/reference/run-it-yourself.md).
