# Layout and opening the guide

These are in `config.yml`, under `[Layout]` and `[Opening]`. Run `/guide reload` after changing them.

## The page list, or one column

```yaml
layout:
  mode: sidebar
```

`sidebar` lists your pages down the left with the page being read beside them. `simple` is one column of text, with buttons underneath to move between pages, and `/guide` on its own opens a list of contents.

## How wide

```yaml
layout:
  sidebar:
    min: 80
    max: 110
  content:
    max: 280
  gap: 12
```

In pixels. The page list grows to fit its longest name between `min` and `max`; the page itself wraps to fit `content`. The defaults add up to about 400, which fits every screen at the game's automatic interface size. Much wider and players on big screens lose the edges of the page, since the game makes its interface bigger on them.

## The title

```yaml
layout:
  title: "Emerald SMP Guide"
  title-icon: "guide.png"
```

The words at the top of every guide window, and a picture from the `images` folder in front of them.

## Short pages

```yaml
layout:
  min-height: 24
```

Short pages are made this many lines tall, so the buttons under every page stay in the same place. `0` turns it off.

## Opening it with a key

```yaml
quick-actions:
  hotkey: true
  pause-menu: false
```

Minecraft has a **Quick Actions** key, under **Controls** in the game's options. With `hotkey` on, pressing it shows a list of your guide pages, and picking one opens it. `pause-menu` also puts the guide on the pause menu, in place of the button that normally says "Report Bugs" or "Server Links".

These work through a small data pack in your world, so the first time after changing them, run `/guide reload` and the server re-reads its data packs, or restart.

## Monospace

```yaml
font:
  monospace: true
```

Minecraft's letters are all slightly different widths. Monospace writes pages in a bundled font where every letter is as wide as the next, for pages full of columns. Most servers leave it off.
