# Items and pictures

## Items and blocks

Any item or block the game has a picture of, right in the text:

```markdown
Trade a ![Diamond](item:minecraft:diamond) for a ![Grass block](block:minecraft:grass_block).
```

The words in the square brackets show when a player points at the picture. `item:` and `block:` both work for anything; with `block:`, a block shows its own face where the game has one.

Pictures come from the player's own game, so nothing is downloaded for them, and they look the way the inventory shows them: grass and leaves green, potions with their liquid in the bottle.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**A few things have no picture.** Chests, banners, heads, beds, shields and shulker boxes are drawn by the game itself rather than from a picture, so they can't go on a page. The page shows a red note in their place, and the [editor](/plugins/markdown-guide/getting-started/the-web-editor.md) underlines them.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**In the editor**, type `item:` and a few letters of a name and pick it from the list, or use the **Item** button and search.
{% endhint %}

A new item on a page goes into the guide's resource pack when you save or run `/guide reload`. Players get the updated pack the next time they open the guide, which takes a moment.

## Pictures of your own

Put PNG files in `plugins/MarkdownGuide/images/`, run `/guide reload`, and use them by name:

```markdown
![](coin.png) 25 coins
```

They are drawn as tall as a line of text, and as wide as they come out at that height. Small square pictures, like 16 by 16 pixels, look best.

The same pictures can go in front of a page's name in the page list, with `icon:` at the top of the page; see [your first page](/plugins/markdown-guide/getting-started/your-first-page.md#page-settings).
